The streets of New York may not quite be paved with gold. But one man in USA is proving that the cracks on Manhattan pavements really can bear riches.
Raffi Stepanian, 43, has begun crawling around the New York ‘Diamond District’ on his hands and knees, plucking jewels and fragments of precious metals from between the slabs.
Armed with a pair of tweezers, Mr Stepanian, an unemployed diamond setter from Queens, claims to have collected $1,010 (£623) worth in the past fortnight.
“I’m surviving on it,” he said.
“I may be about to trigger a new gold rush on the streets of New York,” Mr Stepanian told The Daily Telegraph. “The soil in the sidewalks of 47th street are saturated with the stuff”.

How to find hidden treasures without treasure maps!
Where can you find hidden treasure? Almost anywhere. How can you find it? Here are some new ideas on that.
I was once involved in tearing down an old house. In the attic, hidden underneath the insulation, I found a glass piggy bank of old pennies. I also found a rare old magazine and a few other minor treasures.
Treasure is not always things of obvious value, though. Hidden in the walls of that house was a treasure that at the time never occurred to me: copper tubing. I later discovered that the water lines we paid to have hauled away were sold as valuable scrap by the junk man. It made me wonder what else could be “treasure,” and where else I might find it.
New Ideas On Hidden Treasure
Hidden in a warehouse in the small town where I used to live, was a mountain of old boxes. It was the leftover inventory of a wooden clock factory that had gone out of business. The owner of the clocks had let them sit there for at least ten years. Finally someone explained to him how he could sell them on Ebay, and he realized the treasure he was sitting on.
An old Mayan Indian we met at a hot spring in Arizona showed us how to find arrowheads and metates (used for grinding corn or mesquite beans) in the desert. They’re hundreds of years old. He sold one of his metates for $200 during a yard sale, but this may be illegal now. Check with authorities on this one.
I have hidden money several times in my life. Many people do. What happens when people die unexpectedly? The money and valuables they hid remain where they are until discovered. When a conductor passes through a magnetic field, a portion of that magnetic field is disturbed, distorted and reduced. That reduction in the magnetic field is related to a small amount of current that is induced or created in the conductor.
You can do the same thing by jumping rope with a piece of wire instead of the rope. As the wire cuts through the earth’s magnetic field, a small amount of electricity is generated at the end of the wires.
Electromagnetic induction is the creation of an electric field by a fluctuating magnetic field. The electric field may be produced, according to Faraday’s law of induction in two ways: by the motion of a conductor cutting across the lines of magnetic flux of a magnetic field or by a change in the magnetic flux passing through a coil immersed in a non constant magnetic field.

Gold hunting always remained the vocation of the mighty emperors or the daring treasure hunters or pirates. It was never estimated as the hobby that can be pursued by a common man like you and me. Instead of moving the detectors haphazardly, make an extensive search by marking a small patch and patiently covering it bit by bit. Always keep the search coil at least 1cm from the ground while swinging the detector slowly.
Just ignore lengthy and gradual changes in sound, which are the responses to ground mineralization changes. Do not ignore the short or sharp signals even if they are faint.
A manual ground-balance machine using a Double-D coil is required to be re balanced every now and then. The GP or the SD series machines save this trouble.
When the machine remits very small signals, scoop out some amount of soil from the coil. Now drop a handful at a time over the search coil. Now you will be getting signals whenever it touches any metal.
Practicing in the bushy or beach areas where ground has little mineralization will help you to recognize the signals when you are trying on sites that are more difficult.
You can choose from mainly four categories of detectors according to your preferences and expectations. They are:

Underwater detectors
Every gold detector has its virtue and vices. For example, with a specialized prospecting detector you get the high efficiency of locating even tiniest nuggets at shallow depth. However, at the same time with its poor discriminating abilities you might end up with digging up lots of trash.
Finally, patience is the key for striking a big deal in your search for gold. Do not move impatiently to another spot. Locate a small spot and scan it extensively.
Despite your hard work, you might not find anything. Start all over again on a new location applying the same degree of concentration. Remember, with a little effort and the right equipment, you too could find the riches of kings!
