Let Your Children Learn Toothbrush Painting

Kids find painting fun and relaxing. Why not try making a different kind of painting. Did you know you can create a masterpiece with some paint and a toothbrush? You can. It’s easy and entertaining, but very messy. You are going to have to do this craft in a area that can get splattered. The best place to do this outdoors.

Find a location that can be easily cleaned. The outdoors for this project is ideal. If not, make sure you completely cover all areas with newspaper.

Make sure you are wearing old clothes that you don’t care about. Or if you are doing this activity outside you can wear a bathing suit and a plastic smock.

Design some shapes you can use for your painting. Draw those shapes on one of your pieces of paper. You can have two or three big shapes or five to seven small shapes. Your shapes can have a theme such as fish in the sea, or animals in the desert. Once you are done drawing your shapes cut them out.

Place your shapes on to another sheet of paper.

Dip your toothbrush in to your paint. Whatever color you like is fine. Now splatter the paint across your paper by running your fingers across the bristles of your toothbrush. Don’t worry if any paint gets on your shapes at this point. Do this as many times as you like with as many colors as you like. You can do one color across the top and another across the bottom or do them both all over the page. You are the artist so you choose.

Now remove your shapes to see that your painting is now complete. The spots where your shapes were are now white and they stand out. Isn’t that neat?

Leave your paper out to dry and then hang up or place on your refrigerator.

Draw Your Self Portrait

Many artists depict themselves in one or more self portraits during their careers. These portraits do more than simply show us what the artists look like. They often reveal the artists’ personalities, interests, and life styles. In this activity, you will be drawing your own self portrait and in the process reveal something about yourself.

Materials: a pencil, a large sheet of paper, and a mirror.

Getting Started: To begin, take a close look at your face in the mirror. Look for unique details such as the shape of your nose, the shape of your eyes, and the shapes made by your hair.

Notice that your eyes are midway between the top of your head and the bottom of your chin. Next, look at the contours of your face. Take your finger and follow along the edges of your face. If you press slightly, you’ll feel the bone structure that makes your face unique.

The Activity: To start your drawing, it is a good idea to work outwards from the center of your face. Start with your nose. Work slowly, keeping your eye focused on the contours of your face in the mirror. Look down at your paper as little as possible.

Rather than only drawing yourself, include something in your picture that will tell others about who you are, what you like to do, or where you live. When you’ve finished, pin your drawing up and stand back from it. Are you satisfied with the result? If so, sign and date your drawing at the bottom. If not, try another one. You’ll get better with practice.

Comic books or graphic novels have been one of the most popular past time of people young and old. Something about illustrated panels makes story telling a lot easier and a lot more attractive to potential readers.

Comics have evolved to more sophisticated forms of literary art since its humble beginnings of newspaper comic relief. Nowadays, comic books can talk about various themes even deeper ones such as social issues and politics.

Due to its popularity, more and more people are getting into making their own comic books for fun, acquiring comic how to draw techniques are great ways of supplementing this pursuit.

A crucial element in making a comic book is creating an interesting storyline. Contrary to popular belief, art or illustration is only a secondary contributor to a successful comic.

A compelling story line is important in drawing a reader’s attention and building up interest to keep the reader reading from page to page.

Establishing a storyline is also important to determine crucial points of the story where best to apply suitable comic how to draw techniques, by establishing crucial or climactic scenes an illustrator knows when to exaggerate or allocate proper panels.

Basic how to draw Comic techniques

Knowing how to draw elements like backgrounds and characters is one thing but knowing how best to depict a certain scene calls on more technical skills.

There are some basics a novice comic book illustrator should be aware of, these basic comic how to draw techniques are but not limited to:

1. Story boarding - once an illustrator has a story he or she wants to illustrate a storyboard or a basic skeletal framework of the story should be done. The story board need not be pretty but needs to show the basic flow of the story. The story board is what the illustrator refers to ensure that he is kept in track of where the story should lead to.

2. Paneling – A comic book illustrator must allocate a certain number of panels per page, each panel depicts a certain scene so it is very important to allocate larger panels for more dramatic or crucial scenes.

3. Exaggeration – A comic illustrator should learn to exaggerate certain drawn in elements to emphasize crucial points of the story. Some common exaggerations are:

a. Zooming into a certain object
b. Changing visual perspectives
c. Changing colors or sharpening images
d. Adding effects such as blurs or dodges

4. Bleeding – a very common comic how to draw technique is called bleeding. It is when an element from one panel is drawn in a way where it “bleeds” out towards another panel. This can add aesthetics and overall appeal to a comic book or graphic novel.

These are just fairly simple and basic comic how to draw techniques that can help a novice comic book illustrator start. As an illustrator begins to grasp all the concepts other advanced techniques will become apparent, as all other hobbies comic illustration can only get better as time goes by.

When you are just starting out with acrylic painting, you will most certainly make your share of mistakes.

This is the natural process of painting and we all learn and grow from our mistakes. This article introduces some of the more common mistakes beginner acrylic painters make.

Mistake #1 to avoid:

Not using enough variety in your painting. An interesting painting has variety. It creates curiosity and interest, and the viewer wants to return again to observe it.

So how do you create an interesting painting? Use a variety of different brushstrokes, techniques and values in your paintings. Change the direction of your brushstrokes or mix different techniques in the same painting.

Mistake #2 to avoid:

Being too technical or copying. In order to truly paint a subject, and when I say “truly”, I am not saying you should copy the subject exactly as you see it. I am referring to connecting to the painter inside and truly painting your own impression of what you see.

This is how your inner creativity shines on the canvas. It is what set painters like Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet apart from the rest.

They each injected their own style and heart into their work. I believe your own unique creativity comes to the surface the moment you stop relying on the technicalities and theories associated with painting.

I am not saying one shouldn’t study techniques and theory, but at some point we have to put that stuff on the back burner and let our creativity do some of the thinking.

Whatever you do, don’t copy other artists. There is nothing wrong with allowing other artists to influence you, just make sure you allow your own unique style to come through.

Mistake #3 to avoid:

Not observing your subjects. Do you spend time observing the subjects you feel inspired to paint?

If you are a portrait artist, have you done any studying of the human anatomy? If you paint landscapes, do you spend enough time outdoors in that environment? If you aren’t spending enough time observing the subjects that you wish to paint, then you won’t know have enough knowledge to paint them.

Mistake #4 to avoid:

Not using quality art supplies. Are you using quality acrylic painting supplies? A really experienced and talented artist could probably create an entire painting using a toothpick, but who really wants to work that hard?

When it comes to fine art supplies, you usually do get what you pay for. If you paint with a 50cent paintbrush, it will probably paint just like a 50cent paintbrush.

The ferrule will more than likely become loose and the hairs will probably shed. If you are using really cheap paint, you will more than likely get really cheap results. The colors will not have the same brilliance or the right consistency. So invest in quality art supplies and take great care of them as well.

Mistake #5 to avoid:

Not using enough paint. Learn how to apply paint to your canvas. Many beginners don’t reload their brushes often enough. I made this same mistake when I first began painting. I would squeeze out a little glob of paint and try to cover as much area as possible.

In my case, I was just lazy, but many beginners are fearful of wasting paint. This is a reasonable concern considering the cost of supplies. The truth however, is that your paintings will be more interesting if you lay down the brush stroke, leave it alone, and then reload your brush.

Don’t try and scrub the paint into the canvas, otherwise you are just staining, and not painting.

Mistake #6 To Avoid:

Over Thinking. Don’t overly criticize or judge your own work while you are painting. This only creates discouragement and forces many beginners to become frustrated and quit. Just relax and let go. Trust yourself and your abilities.

The most important aspect of painting is the enjoyment we receive from it anyway. Frustration and discouragement should never dominate the painting experience.
